So far I’ve only been able to see the first two episodes of the new Defender series and I’ve got to say I’m really enjoying it thus far. The first episodes really doesn’t have anything in the way of big plot points, so spoilers should be few or non-existent. Basically if you have seen the teaser trailers you already know what episode one and two is going to hold.
We get our first looks at Sigourney Weaver as this season’s big bad. We don’t know a lot about her yet but she is apparently a very powerful lady, and possibly very old? Madame Gao is not only loyal to her but seems to be mildly scared, something we’ve never seen before. Whether she is a higher up within The Hand or a whole other entity has yet to be seen. And Elektra’s back as a “super ninja”, taking on Danny and Jessica at different points.
Unfortunately we didn’t get to see any meet ups between our main characters until the very end of episode two. But I really enjoyed the way each character clearly lives in a separate “world” at the moment. Each one has a different color palette, background setting and soundtrack. The most obvious examples to me was all the red in Daredevil, the purple for Jessica and the hip hop soundtrack for Luke. So you can usually tell before you see the main character which “world” we’re in. I thought this was an interesting idea, showing them as separate for now. And in the final moments of episode two we see Matt meet Jessica when he steps through a red door into her purple room.
I also really enjoyed Danny and Luke mini fight for two reasons. It’s pretty much a comic book tradition that heroes fight upon first meetings only to team up before it’s all over, so that was a nice nod to tradition. Then there was the fight itself. It was pretty funny to see Danny trying to work over Luke with absolutely no effect. I was eager to see what the Ironfist would do to Luke, and I wasn’t disappointed when Danny let it fly!
So far so good, the season looks to be heading in the right direction. I’ll post a complete review/reaction in the next few days.
