Spawn is Coming Back to the Big Screen!

Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, has announced that a new Spawn movie is officially in the works!  Mcfarlane has already made a fairly terrible movie and really impressive (though unfinished) animated series starring Spawn.  The original movie came out in 1997 and was a little too “comicy” and made quite a few changes to the source material.  The animated series, which aired on HBO and also began in 97, was a much truer version of the dark, gritty, violent world of Spawn.  It still has fanboys like me wanting a season 4 or movie to finish the story.  As long as the story stays away from the original and moves toward the series, we should be totally ok.

The movie will be produced by Blumhouse, the people who brought you Get Out, Split, Paranormal Activity and The Purge.  And it will be directed by McFarlane himself, that was one of his conditions of any new movie deal.  Having a first time director has me concerned but coming from a comic book background he knows how to composite a shot and tell a story visually (comic pages are essentially story boards after all).

This project has had starts and stops since all the way back in 2010.  But with the rise in R rated movies being financially successful it looks like it’s time for everyone’s favorite Hellspawn to rise again!

  1. This should be good, always liked the character of Spawn. Wasn’t a fan of the film though, so good news there will be another try at a new movie. Hopefully they get it right this time. I never saw the animated series you mention, but have heard of it.
